Each year, when statistics of plastic or cosmetic surgery are surveyed across Australia, Liposuction remains one of the most popular procedures for men and women (followed by Breast Augmentation/Breast Implant procedures and Facial Procedures). Liposuction can be undertaken on it’s own for selected patients to reduce fat stores in certain areas of the body. Liposuction results can be heart-warming to patients who have done all they can to shape an area of their body, but find the area is resistant to exercise and good nutrition alone. So if you’re a suitable patient with good skin tone and you readily maintain a steady weight and ideal BMI, liposuction surgery may be a great solution for you.
However, as people tend to have loose skin as well as excess fat, liposuction is also commonly combined with other skin reduction or skin tightening surgeries to address both stubborn fat and skin redundancy issues (skin folds).

- skin resiliency and skin health
- lifestyle and how this impacts your hormones and your BMI (Body Mass Index)

- adherence to surgery advice
In terms of Item 5 above, getting good liposuction results also depends on how precisely YOU follow your pre-surgery and post-surgery instructions. Do you need to lose weight before you Liposuction?
Liposuction is not a replacement for weight loss or healthy lifestyle habits. Yes, many people DO need to get to a stable weight and stable, healthy BMI (Body Mass Index) before they are suitable candidates for liposuction.
The diagram below shows a general overview of what body types might be suitable for liposuction and what body shapes might need additional weight loss.
If your body torso or abdomen area generally resembles a “C” diagram in the illustration below or if your thighs and abdomen resemble the “D” diagram in the illustration below, you may be a candidate for either liposuction of the abdomen and/or hips and thighs; so long as you meet other suitability requirements and have good skin health/skin resiliency. However, if you are a “D-E” or an “E” body shape, you may actually require a Tummy Tuck/Abdominoplasty procedure or more intensive skin tightening procedure and possibly additional weight loss before being suitable for surgery. That’s because if you reduce fat via liposuction surgery, your liposuction results will not look as good as they can because of redundant skin (skin folds). Please remember that liposuction can be a great help for the right patient; however, is NOT a miracle cure for excess weight. It is simply a surgical body contouring tool for shaping certain parts of the body or for combining with a Tummy Tuck or Breast Reduction procedure to get a smoother result.
Body shapes differ and your height, torso length, rib cage or hip width may all have an impact on how YOUR body will appear after liposuction.
Realistic expectations and following pre-surgery and post-surgery advice are the key parts of having a successful liposuction surgery.

Do you need Liposuction or Liposculpture?
Nearly EVERYONE has heard of liposuction. Even my mother, who doesn’t even know who Beyoncé is believes she “knows everything” about liposuction.
But ‘knowing doesn’t actually mean understanding’. There are numerous misconceptions about liposuction and what it can do for your body.
Additionally, many people have not yet heard the term liposculpture — or they assume it’s a synonym for liposuction. To help clarify the differences, I’m going to describe the key differentiation between liposuction and liposculpture.
Liposuction vs. Liposculpture
Liposuction is a procedure typically performed whilst you are under a general Anaesthetic (i.e. unconscious with their breathing monitored by a qualified Anaesthetist). Your excess fat is removed by a Surgeon who uses a long, hollow cylindrical instrument called a cannula.
Liposculpture is typically performed under local Anaesthetic where you are aware of what is going on but can feel little pain. The progress of your procedure can be judged during your operation to help you get a better result. It is, essentially, a slower, detailed and finer liposuction to sculpt your desired look.
Often, your Surgeon will infiltrate the region with a solution of local Anaesthetic and Adrenaline to help minimize pain and trauma to the surrounding tissues.
This is known as tumescent lipo.
There are numerous other aspects that you and your Surgeon should consider before you embark on your liposuction or liposculpting procedure, including your desired results, and ascertaining they are realistic, achievable and able to be maintained (this requires an ongoing healthy lifestyle including good nutrition, adequate sleep and plenty of regular exercise).

Liposuction surgery (known as Lipo) is a common performed procedure for women and men who are seeking to reshape their bodies and remove unsightly bulges. But as with all cosmetic surgery procedures, you’ll want to explore the benefits and risks in detail before you decide it’s your absolute best option for body contouring, thigh reduction or belly-bulge taming.
Is Lipo the best operation for reducing stubborn fat stores?
People often ask me if liposuction is the correct operation to achieve their desired body shape.
- there are non-surgical and surgery-based options for fat reduction & body contouring
- results from liposuction can vary from patient to patient (so can healing)
- not everyone is a great candidate for liposuction surgery
Why is LIPOSUCTION so frequently requested by both men and women?
- This is primarily due to Liposuction being able to contour the body in a proven way – flattening the belly area or reducing body bulges that persist where exercise and good nutrition have failed to yield the smooth contours a person desires.
- But it IS surgery and does have risks – so do your homework before you choose a Liposuction based surgical solution for body contouring. (Tumescent Liposuction is one of the most preferred types of Liposuction because of the long-term monitoring of results across many Cosmetic Liposuction Surgeons and Plastic Surgeons).
Most common areas that liposuction is used on the body:
- thighs or legs
- neck area
- flanks or buttocks
Additionally, liposuction is commonly used in customised body contouring procedures that reshape and refine:
- The belly or Abdominal area (e.g., a full Tummy Tuck that includes Diastasis Recti repair, navel reconstruction and extra body contouring for added smoothness or a better body shape using Liposuction)
- The breast (Breast Reduction with Liposuction)

What makes a good liposuction candidate?
Here are the questions that I ask patients during a patient consultation for Tumescent Liposuction (body contouring) procedures.
Liposuction Surgery Question #1
Do you have areas of fatty tissue that seem to never budge regardless of lifestyle, exercise and nutrition?
The patients who are most thrilled with their results have liposuction surgery on stubborn areas of fat around the torso, upper arms and thighs.
To assess if YOU’RE a potentially good candidate for liposuction body contouring surgery, ask yourself these questions:
- Do you live a generally healthy lifestyle?
- Are you a non-smoker?
- Do you maintain a stable weight and consistent BMI?
- Is fitness part of your life, but you find you just can’t beat those bulges?
If you answer YES to these questions, liposuction surgery may be a great solution to help you get the body contours you’ve not been able to attain at the gym or walking trail.
What do I mean by the term “stubborn areas” or “stubborn pockets of fat”?
Stubborn fatty deposits are those regions which do not seem to slim down regardless of how hard you train, or how much weight you lose.
- In women, stubborn ares of fat are most typically around the thighs or abdomen
- In men, stubborn areas of fat tend to accumulate on the abdomen and/or chest.
Liposuction can help to permanently reduce the fat from these stubborn areas.
Further, should you gain weight in the future, it sometimes tends to be more evenly distributed across the body rather than more prominent in your ‘fat-prone’ areas.
Liposuction Surgery Question #2
Are you within a few kilograms of your “happy” weight?
What do I mean by happy weight? It’s a weight that your body tends to stabilise at.
We live in a social environment where the pressure to look a certain way is higher than ever. Glossy magazines, Hollywood, TV and, most of all, social media are constantly presenting us with images of beautiful people, often scantily clad. This can give people incredibly unrealistic expectations of what their body shape and weight should be. For the moment, put all that aside. Forget the airbrushed images of impossibly beautiful, unblemished bodies in exotic locations. Let’s get real.
Are you close to a healthy weight that you would want to be, realistically, for the rest of your adult life? Are you within, say, 5kg, of that weight?
Liposuction surgery is designed for creating beautiful contours and removing relatively small amounts of fat from stubborn areas.
That is, it is a surgery for shaping the body. It is not good for debulking large fatty deposits. For this reason, I often prefer to call it liposculpture. Thus, you will only be happy with the result if you are pretty close to the size, weight and Body Mass Index (BMI) that you want to be.
At this point, it should be emphasised that maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle is of paramount importance.
- In my opinion, you should never “go on a diet”.
- You should instead seek to create an enduring lifestyle where you eat foods that promote well being (and limit naughty things).
- We all need a little dessert or crave a cheeky cocktail now and then, but you have to sensible. These are all high in calories and sugar, and low in nutrients. So keep these limited to very special occasions only (and no, finishing for the day on Monday does NOT qualify as a special occasion).
- It is also essential to keep active.
- Find activities that you love so it’s not a chore to do them; go for long walks along a track you like, have a gym buddy, join a regular group at the local tennis club – whatever keeps you going back.
All that said, if you are eating well and keeping fit but are unhappy with certain aspects of your body, then liposculpture using tumescent liposuction can often help get you to where you want to be.
Again, Liposuction Surgery is NOT a way to drop kilograms or to compensate for bad lifestyle choices or lack of fitness. To get the best results, you also need to have a healthy lifestyle AND healthy, resilient skin.
Liposuction Surgery Question #3
Has your weight been relatively stable for at least 6 months?
This question is very important. Liposuction is for patients who weight is pretty consistent over a considerable length of time.
We all have periods where our weight goes up and down. My last relationship break-up, I gained over 15 kilograms from giving up regular exercise and eating way too much comfort food, so I totally understand how easy it can be to gain weight and how hard it can be to fight your way back to being healthy.
So, if you are in a period where you are gaining weight, or losing weight, then liposuction surgery is not a good idea. You need to get to your happy weight, or close to it, and maintain that for a long period of time.
Why is having a stable weight important?
Because liposuction works by carefully removing fat from the areas where your body has a tendency to hold onto fatty deposits. If these areas are changing (that is, if these areas are growing or shrinking), then Lipo cannot possibly give you a predictable result.
My suggestion: Get to a point where your weight is always around a number you are pretty happy with, then we can work on the areas that bother you and you have the best chance of getting a shape with which you’re thrilled.
Liposuction may NOT be the solution for excess skin after weight loss or bariatric surgery
Lipo is also not the best option for post-weight loss patients who have lost a lot of weight (such as after Bariatric Surgery), and who have an abundance of excess skin. Stretched, redundant skin after significant weight loss requires a surgical reduction, with or without liposuction, for contouring.
Three BIG Myths About Liposuction
There is plenty of misinformation about Liposuction and its use in cosmetic plastic surgery. Let’s tackle some of them.
MYTH #1: YOU CAN GET INSTANTANEOUS ‘WALK IN WALK OUT’ RESULTS FROM A QUICK LIPOSUCTION PROCEDURE
Sadly, the promise of walking into a Clinic, gently falling asleep — and walking out thirty minutes later with a svelte body — seems to be a Liposuction Myth that persists among people considering surgery to remove their stubborn body fat deposits. This is not possible. There will always be some downtime for your recovery. Our Plastic Surgeons have ways to minimise this, but there is no such thing as an “instant transformation.”
MYTH #2: LIPOSUCTION IS ONLY DONE IN BACK ROOMS BY “COWBOY SURGEONS”
On the flip side of Myth #1, there is an equally widespread impression that there are unethical doctors performing dangerous “cowboy procedures” in backwater Lipo Clinics. Whilst there have been a few renegade doctors pushing the boundaries of safety and ethical practice, there are many doctors performing liposuction who have been thoroughly trained and who practice only to the highest standards. Before you select your Surgeon, ask about whether the procedure is performed in a proper theatre, with a qualified Australian Anaesthetist present, in a facility capable of dealing with any (unlikely) issues that may arise. Also, feel free to ask about your Surgeon’s experience and qualifications. The more you know about your Surgeon, including their training, qualifications, types of procedures they perform — and whether or not they are qualified to operate in accredited Australian Hospitals rather than in non-certified back rooms — the more comfortable you will be that you are in the best hands possible.
MYTH #3: LIPOSUCTION WILL REMOVE ANY AND ALL YOUR EXCESS FAT
Not all areas of excess body fat can be addressed by liposuction.
Some areas of the body are simply too delicate to be treated using Liposuction. Some areas simply do not respond well to these techniques.
Also, removing either too little fat OR too much fat will produce less than desirable results.
There can be complications
For example, if too much fat under your skin is removed, a permanent divot can form. Again, any areas of concern are best discussed with your Plastic Surgeons prior to proceeding with sculpting, fat removal or contouring using liposuction techniques.
